This is a 1965 Mercury Montclaire. I’m told that back during this time, car companies had their signature colors, like the aqua that is often seen on Chevys, and this coral color was Ford’s. The owner has told me it was quite difficult to match when he got the car painted. He purchased it partially restored, and the previous owner had attempted to patch the paint with a lighter color that was supposed to be the official one, but didn’t match. They ended up taking the door off the gas bay and using the inside of it as the base for paint matching. I think it came out beautifully!
Another fun fact is that air conditioning wasn’t very common back in 1965, and this car tries to solve that problem by having the entire back window roll down!

I was still working out a good workflow when I did this. I ended up doing a lot of over painting and then erasing to get consistent texture in the paint.
I didn’t feel up to tackling the interior when I painted this. I didn’t have many reference pictures and the main one lacked detail. I did end up being able to examine the car again several months later and finished out the interior then!
