Painting of a red 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda with fancy chrome rims

1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda

Hand painted in Rebelle 7 Pro on a Surface Pro 8 (i7, 16gb RAM) with Slim Pen 2.

This car leapt out at me at a car show and I knew I wanted to paint it. The smooth graceful lines were lovely, and those rims were so much fun! Little did I know…

I also wanted to try a looser, more ‘painterly’ style on it, emphasizing the brush strokes instead of smoothing them out. My attempt at a looser style failed miserably, but I do like the brush strokes and how the piece came out!

These rims were beautiful, but they caused me so many troubles trying to draw them! Shiny chrome is very shiny, and so reflects everything, making it difficult to see what is real structure and what is just a reflection. I was glad I took so many reference photos, because I needed every single one to figure out what those silly rims were doing!

It finally clicked when I figured out that the rear rims were inset much more than the front ones and I was able to resolve all the reflections I was seeing.

I like using an odd, contrasting color in the background to find places I’ve missed.
